Why this site exists
Most overtime calculators implement one national default and stop. That is useful until a state adds daily overtime, public-works rules, premium days, fringe treatment, special schedules, or a different regular-rate calculation. A confident generic answer can then be wrong by an amount that lands directly in someone's paycheck.
State Wage Tools is an independent developer-built reference project based in Portland, Oregon. Each tool is intentionally narrow. It covers a specific rule set, links to the controlling official sources, shows the calculation line by line, and names the questions it cannot decide.
How the tools are made
- Statutes, administrative rules, and labor-agency guidance are used as primary sources.
- Rules are converted into explicit thresholds, formulas, inclusions, and exceptions.
- The same JavaScript shipped to the browser is exercised by automated tests.
- Official worked examples are reproduced when the responsible agency publishes them.
- Frequently changing rate tables are not silently hardcoded when users can obtain the governing rate from the official publication.
The full process is documented on the methodology page.
Privacy
The calculators have no accounts and no database. Figures entered into a calculator stay in the browser and are not submitted or stored. Hosting and advertising data are described separately in the privacy policy.
Independence
State Wage Tools is not affiliated with BOLI, the State of Oregon, or any other government agency. The calculators are unofficial estimators, not agency determinations or legal advice. If a tool conflicts with an official source, the official source controls.
