The Hawaii weekly overtime rule
Hawaii wage-and-hour guidance and HRS Chapter 387 generally require overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. This calculator pays all hours at straight time first and then adds the extra half-time premium for overtime hours.
Basic formula
No daily overtime except the public-works exception
The verified registry says Hawaii has no general daily overtime rule, with an exception for state/county public works projects. Do not use this general calculator for a state or county public works project that has a separate daily overtime requirement.
Minimum wage and tip credit
The minimum-wage cards above are rendered from verified registry values. Hawaii permits a tip credit under conditions, but the registry marks the tip-credit amount as unverified. Under the site publication rule, this page describes the existence of a conditional tip credit and renders no dollar amount.
HRS 387-3 exemptions
HRS 387-3 contains exemptions and special categories. This calculator does not determine whether an employee, employer, industry, or duty set is exempt. Confirm coverage before treating the output as a payroll instruction.
What this does not determine
- Whether an HRS 387-3 exemption applies.
- Whether the employee is on a state or county public works project with daily overtime.
- Whether a tip credit is valid, and no tip-credit amount is displayed.
- Multi-rate workweeks beyond the single-rate plus additional-pay regular-rate model.
- Federal FLSA, contract, union, or public-sector rules that may be more protective.
Worked examples
Example 1: 45-hour workweek
Example 2: bonus in the regular rate
